Sapling
03:26
|
|||
There's a deer leaping through the forest as if on fire
Leaving behind a trail like a wake in the water
And it rushes past me like the wind in leaves
And I wish that I could be so free
Reaching out for you
Like a sapling stretching for the sun
Would you still see me in the forest of trees
If I turned and faced the dark?
There's an evening bird calling down to me
Asking why, why, why, why can't I just leave?
And it flitters and flutters away among the trees
And I'm left alone answering "'Cause I'm lonely"
Reaching out for you
Like a sapling stretching for the sun
Would you still see me in the forest of trees
If I turned and faced the dark?

Trailblazing
04:21
|
|||
Time takes me by the hand and marches down the road
I was hoping I could meet you there before I got too old
Cause I keep thinking I can wait awhile and just kick about the stones
But time is scolding me onward and now I really have got to go
There's a whisper in the forest and a flash of white-tailed deer
They can see I'm driven forward and they can smell my lonely fear
And time is holding all the answers and keeping them close
So I must pick up my feet and follow and see now where they go
Oh I wish you'd journey with me
I really hate to be alone
But I will mark these trees around me
If someday you'll follow

Blue Heron
02:44
|

We climbed out onto the highway
Through a swamp an ankle deep
We were always loosing our way
And taking with us bits of trees
Blue Heron flying over
You're not missing anything
Wish that I could learn to hover
Over highways and over streams
Maybe I could rest on the breeze
While watching below the struggle of one like me
The road back home is always longer
With tired limbs and cold wet feet
At least this way we'll face the sunset
We'll beat the dusk and find our peace
Little Brown Bat gliding swiftly
You're not missing anything
You've had barns to take your rest in
Behind you is a full day's sleep
Maybe I'm not missing anything
I've had the day for waking and a quiet night is coming in

Backwoods
03:06
|
|||
I've been living in backwoods I thought that it would be good but I've been living in backwoods for far too long
I've been living in cities I thought that it would be easy I've been living in cities for far too long
I've been traveling town to town I've been traveling round and around

We can only shift so many times in our seats
And we can only stand so long the tapping of our feet
And it's a good thing we're singers or the silence might stretch on
But we'll listen to songs that both of us hate
But somehow know all the words to anyway
And we'll feel a bit better the louder we sing along
Has it really been so long since we've been here?
The trees have grown in closer these past few years
And I still can't believe that we haven't done the same
And we both know that we're both somehow to blame
So back through the silence we'll sit in it's space
And we'll risk those hard questions that we've been saving
And we'll send out new shoots towards the other before we leave
They've been cutting back branches for the phone lines along these streets
They've been cutting back branches
They've been cutting back branches for the phone lines along these streets
But we both know a call's not the same as when you're sitting next to me

If I could sew the mountains on my clothes
Tattoo the lakes and places where I go
I would be a part of this land
And it would be a part of who I am
But what is this need I feel to stake a claim
Oh surely my share is in the air that the trees and I give and take
And it would no less be, who I am
Then if I broke my heart and buried a part in this land
So I will remember I carried this water under my skin
And at every breath I breathe I am taking this place in
And though I travel far I will keep
A part of this air
A part of these lakes
And a part of these mountains with me

Wild One
04:27
|
|||
You're a wild one, you're a wild one
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You are the eldest of three, my grandfather's name is on thee
But you grow so fast, oh so fast
Please, honey, please slow it down
You're a wild one, You're a wild one
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You are so bold and so free, with a heart of gold I can see
But you grow so fast, oh so fast
Please, honey, please slow it down
You're a wild one, You're wild one
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Heavenly creatures, are we
And lives of freedom, we'll lead
But we grow so fast, oh so fast
Please, honey, please slow it down
You're a wild one, You're a wild one
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Please, honey, please slow it down

Lone Wolf
03:27
|
|||
I'm the lone wolf, howling out,
Up on the hillside above my house
Crying out for someone to take me to the moon
But that's not on you, its not on you
Cause you've let me in so many times
I keep running out, changing my mind
Looking for a home I belong to I say that can't be found
And that's on me, that's on me
Bright side of the moon is calling to me
Telling me that I could be wild and free
Telling me I belong to the hills and the trees and that could be enough for me
It's not going to be, it's not going to be
Dark side of the moon is calling me too
Telling me that I can't change my tune
Telling me I've no home, I'm alone and I always will be
Unless I choose to belong to you, unless I choose to belong to you
I'm the lone wolf, howling out,
Up on the hillside above my house
Crying out for someone to take me to the moon

We'll remember walking in the rain
And we won't forget what we meant, though we might forget what we had to say
Cause I never have to wonder if you'll understand
But it seems like something is lost in the middle of the ocean
How I wish I could walk through that oak door and on our grey slate roof
How I wish we could play to the fireplace just like we used to
But it's more than just that house we loved
It's more than just those songs we sung
It's more than just our hearts that are breaking
We'll remember walking in the rain
And we won't forget what it meant to live life this way
And I'll never have to wonder whether you'll understand
The part of me that's lost somewhere in the middle of the ocean
We won't forget, we won't forget, we won't we won't we won't forget

Farmers Pt 2.
05:08
|
|||
I should have called home months ago
And I should have been there with you
Maybe I'd have known just what to say that would
Get you to choose to pull through
Are you happy now the season is over?
The leaves are laying everything to rest
But this year I'll be needing to remember
That some things will still come back from the dead
You took a part of home when you left
You'd held it all these years, I hardly knew
But the farm is still a far cry from empty
Your love lingers in the field like autumn dew
Your love lingers in the field like autumn dew

When I was young and unafraid
And free from all the plans I'd make
When I was young and unafraid
I sat above the city
I loudly said I never will
Add to all that ages ill
Oh I alone will grow up still
Far above the city
But plans grow round you like a vine
They pull you down in no time
And soon you will be bound to find
The sparkle's in the city
And you'll be caught up in the chase
Always on the edge of your big break
And soon you won't see your mistake
Of belonging to the city
But shingles and clapboards clatter down
And cupolas crumble to the ground
And plans are buried by the sound
Of aging in the city
So someday soon I'll walk alone
Far from this place I called my home
And I will let my old feet roam
Far above the city
Far above the city
far above the city
